Claire Marcus is an artist with a background in latin/classics, architecture, and art history. She originally planned to study anthropology at the University of Pennsylvania, but late switched her major to architecture. Her art focuses on landscapes, and she uses several mediums (such as oil paints, textiles, cloth, and photography) to create her artwork. As research for her art, Clair has visited several museums, both foreign and at home, and has studied abroad in European countries. Before she became an artist, Claire had several jobs, two of which were security guard and later on a bookstore manager at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Even after she began her career as an artist, she worked at several different places; Clair was an artist at the Banana Factory and also taught art to middle school children.
As for technology influencing her career, Claire takes photos and transfers the prints onto cloth, uses cars and planes to visit other countries and museums, and takes online classes to further her knowledge of art and literature. It sounded as though her use of technology was subtle yet constant (primarily through travel).
While the artwork Clair produces does not interest me, the process and materials she uses to make art do. I have always found printmaking to be an interesting artform, and I like how she used printmaking to transfer photos onto cloth. Aside from Claire’s artwork, I was most fascinated by the diversity of her careers and her drive to learn more about fields that influence or include art.
