The Museum of the City of New York houses six collections of various types of art. The Prints, Drawings, and Photographs Collection provides numerous perspectives concerning the creation of the city and how political, social, and cultural aspects have changed over the years. The Costume and Textiles Collection provides various clothing artifacts worn by New York citizens from the 17th to the 21st century, and illustrates the social and cultural fads and customs. The Manuscript and Ephemera Collection includes paper documents from the 17th to 21st century that provide insight to various daily aspects of society. The Decorative Arts and Furniture Collection includes various effects of daily living from the 18th to the 19th century. The Paintings and Sculpture Collection provides a variety of works from the 17th to 20th century, such as portraits and graffiti. Lastly, the Theater Collection has various documents related to the business of theater and individuals involved with it from the 18th to 21st century.
The Schwartz Children’s Center is part of the Museum of the City of New York, and provides educational programs for local children. The programs provide hands on learning experiences to promote children connect and interpret information, use critical thinking to arrive at logical conclusions, and to convey these conclusions in a clear and rational manner.
The Museum of the City of New York also provides tours of the city that allow participants to explore the city’s history up close, and to inform them that even though the city has changed over time, the history is still visible if you look for it. These tours focus primarily on a comparative analysis of the city’s architecture.
